This text is designed for an introductory course in database management. I Such a course is usually required as part of an information systems curriculum in business schools, computer technology programs, and applied computer science departments. The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and International Federation of Information Processing Societies (IFIPS) curriculum guidelines (for example, IS `97) all outline this type of database management course. Previous editions of our text have been used successfully for more than 15 years at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in management and professional development programs.

This text represents an extensive revision and updating of the fifth edition of Modern Database Management. These revisions are necessary to accommodate the technical, managerial, and methodological changes occurring at an ever-increasing pace in this field. However, we have endeavored to retain the best features of our previous editions. We have made every effort to justify the title Modern Database Management, which was introduced in the fourth edition.

In this sixth edition we have changed the order of authorship because of the reduced involvement of Fred McFadden as he eases into retirement. Fred has reviewed every page of the manuscript and provided sage guidance on the direction of the revisions. Fred McFadden is the "father" of this text, and his words and ideas will always be present on its pages.

New to This Edition

The sixth edition of Modern Database Management updates and expands materials in areas undergoing rapid change due to improved managerial practices, database design tools and methodologies, and database technology. The themes of the sixth edition reflect the major trends in the informations systems field and the skills required of modern information systems graduates:

  • Web-enabled systems design and programming within an overall client/server architecture for systems
  • Large-scale databases and data warehouses
  • Clarifying system requirements through thorough system modeling and design
  • Criticality of database performance in an increasingly on-line environment
  • SQL as a standard for database querying

In all the chapters, new screen captures are included to reflect the latest database technologies and a new Web Resources section lists Websites that can provide the student with the information on the latest database trends and expanded background details on important topics covered in the text. The major structural changes to the text are:

  • The two object-oriented database chapters are now adjacent chapters, and have been moved to the end of the text, where they are presented as a continuous coverage of this emerging database technology and where they do not break up the natural flow among the other chapters.
  • The client/server section of the book has been extensively rewritten and now emphasizes the Internet, intranet, and extranet as implementations of a client/server architecture.
  • SQL is now covered in more depth and in two chapters.
  • The data warehousing chapter has been significantly rewritten and moved forward as a chapter in the implementation section of the book, representing the explosive growth of this form of database.

The following presents a chapter-by-chapter description of the major changes in this edition. Each chapter description presents a statement of the purpose of that chapter, followed by a description of the changes and revisions that have been made since the fifth edition. Each paragraph concludes with a description of the strengths that have been retained from the fifth edition.

Part I: The Context of Database Management

Chapter 1: The Database Environment. This chapter discusses the role of databases in organizations and previews the major topics in the remainder of the text. The chapter introduces a revised classification scheme that now recognizes the four types of databases outlined in the fifth edition—personal, work group, departmental, and enterprise—and now includes Internet/ intranet/extranet databases. The explanation of enterprise databases is expanded to include databases that are part of enterprise resource planning systems and data warehouses. The chapter updates the discussion of the evolution of database technologies from pre-database files to modern object-relational and Web-enabled systems. The chapter continues to present a well-organized comparison of database technology compared to conventional file-processing systems.

Chapter 2: Database Development Process. This chapter presents a detailed discussion of the role of database development within the broader context of information systems development. The chapter explains the process of database development for both structured life cycle and prototyping methodologies. The chapter continues to discuss important issues in database development, including management of the diverse group of people involved in database development and frameworks for understanding database architectures and technologies. The chapter also continues to emphasize the information engineering methodology in database development, including the role of the enterprise data model. Reviewers frequently note the compatibility of this chapter with what students learn in systems analysis and design classes.

Part II: Database Analysis

Chapter 3: Modeling Data in the Organization. This chapter, with a new title, presents a thorough introduction to conceptual data modeling with the entity-relationship model. The new chapter title reflects a refocusing of the chapter on the reason for the entity-relationship model: to unambiguously document the rules of the business that influence database design. The chapter contains a thoroughly updated section on the latest approaches to modeling business rules, which has been moved from Chapter 4. Specific subsections explain in detail how to name and define elements of a data model, which are essential in developing an unambiguous E-R diagram. A new section addresses an issue many students face as they learn data modeling: whether to represent data as attributes or relationships. The chapter continues to proceed from simple to more complex examples, and it concludes with a comprehensive E-R diagram for Pine Valley Furniture Company.

Chapter 4: The Enhanced E-R Model and Business Rules. This chapter presents a discussion of several advanced E-R data model constructs. New to the chapter is an introduction of entity clustering, which is a way to present simpler versions of an E-R diagram. The chapter extensively updates coverage of the GUIDE business rules methodology based on the latest guidelines, and now shows the structure of these guidelines, which will facilitate student understanding. The chapter continues to present a thorough coverage of supertype/subtype relationships.

Part III: Database Design

Chapter 5: Logical Database Design and the Relational Model. This chapter describes the process of converting a conceptual data model to the relational data model. It features an improved discussion of the characteristics of foreign keys and introduces the important concept of a non-intelligent enterprise key. Enterprise keys (also called surrogate keys for data warehouses) are being emphasized as some concepts of object-orientation migrate into the relational technology world. The discussion of functional dependencies and normalization has been somewhat enhanced. The chapter continues to emphasize the basic concepts of the relational data model and the role of the database designer in the logical design process.

Chapter 6: Physical Database Design and Performance. This chapter describes the steps that are essential in achieving an efficient database design. The chapter contains a new emphasis on ways to improve database performance. Several sections have been enhanced with references to specific techniques available in Oracle and other DBMSs to improve database processing performance. The discussion of indexes has been expanded to include descriptions of types of indexes (primary and secondary indexes, join index, hash index table) that are more widely available in database technologies as techniques to improve query processing speed. The discussion of RAID has been updated to reflect the latest thinking on this important technology. The chapter continues to emphasize the physical design process and the goals of that process.

Part IV: Implementation

Chapter 7: SQL. This chapter presents a thorough introduction to the SQL used by most DBMSs (SQL-92) and introduces the changes that are included in the latest standard (SQL-99). The major change for the sixth edition is that the overall coverage of SQL is expanded and divided into this and the next chapter. This chapter includes more examples of SQL code, using mostly SQL-99 syntax and some Oracle 8i syntax. There is an improved coverage of views, both dynamic and materialized. Chapter 7 explains the SQL commands to create and maintain a database and to program single-table queries. The chapter continues to use the Pine Valley Furniture Company case to illustrate a wide variety of practical queries and query results.

Chapter 8: Advanced SQL. This new chapter continues the explanation of SQL with a careful explanation of multiple-table queries, transaction integrity, data dictionary, triggers and stored procedures, and embedded SQL in other programming language programs. All forms of the OUTER JOIN command are now covered. This chapter illustrates how to store the results of a query in a derived table, the CAST command to convert data between different data types, and the CASE command for doing conditional processing in SQL. The chapter also outlines the new on-line analytical processing (OLAP) features of SQL-99, which are necess...

Amazingly well written
By jackofsometrades
I bought this book for a DBMS course in a university and I liked it. This is the best written book compared to any IT book on any subject I've read. Everything seems so easy and simple with this. And this covers a lot of ground, enough at least for any basic level DBMS course. It covers the basics, SQL, (E)ER-diagrams, O-O db's, warehousing, etc.
What this is NOT: this is not a hands-on guide for real work. This is the first introduction to what you should know before beginning any DB-related work.

Great Introductory Text
By Jeff Stephens
Good up-to-date introductory text on Database Systems. It covers all the bases although in a less quantative way than the Elmasri/Navathe or Ramakrishnan/Gehrke texts. Excellent web based support material. Also, if you get the Oracle Edition (ISBN 0201383721) you'll get 3 great CD's: Oracle Designer/2000, Rel. 2.1; Oracle Developer/2000, Rel. 2.1, and Personal Oracle 7, Rel. 7.3.4. I found this package of text and CD's to be the best value on the market.

"In the end, he gets with the teenage girl and we really don't know how to feel"

No Object is wonderful. The poems are accessible and contemporary. (I'm a poetry novice, so those are important to me.) Natalie references popular history and culture with a care for the reader, hiding nothing. But allusions are sparse, as more than anything the poems are personal. And honest. I love the way she probes the concept of age, questioning it repeatedly and from all angles, so genuinely interested. What does it mean to be a child? What does innocence (or maturity) mean? How does it relate to love, or sex, or war, or religion? Ultimately, it's a joy to follow Natalie as she answers her questions. And when she can't answer them, that's a joy too.

Original and fantastic
By Hadley H.
Hey, hey, hey! I love these poems so much. Sometimes I say to my students: Which poets could you name based on how the poem appears on the page? And they are like, "What?" But what I mean is this: Some poets have a particular signature, for example ee cummings and Gertrude Stein and Natalie Shapero. I could pick a Shapero poem out of a line up due to the incredible whimsy of the occasional ALL CAPS. Reading the poems feels like witnessing a poet of whom other poets will one day say, "I knew her back when she published No Object." Yeah. Don't get left out. You should also, if you teach poetry like I do, invite this poet to your library or your pub or your amphitheater. She is such a good reader.

Great reading and useful resource
By E. L. Bess
This is a very informative collection of essays on a variety of ancient religions. Although diverse, there are many fascinating commonalities to many of these religions. Part of the enjoyment of the reading is tying threads together in otherwise standalone essays, which average about 50 pages.

Sacrifice, for example, is a major ritual component of almost all the religions. What North says about Roman religion could equally apply to most of the religions: the problem of scholars cynically thinking of religion as a tool for rulers and the aristocracy, skepticism about the gods, or the lack of the phenomenon of 'conversion' due to acceptance of the reality of a potentially endless number of gods.

You find parallels in unlikely places. The ritual slaughter of war captives in ancient European religion calls to mind the 'herem' attested in ancient Israel and Moab. The Zhou kings were called 'sons of [the god] Heaven', recalling Egyptian royal ideology where the pharaohs were sons of god. The Indu civilization by the best interpretations had ritual baths in their homes, perhaps for purity, as in later Judaism, and apparently knew of some version of the Gilgamesh epic. We associate philosophy in the West with Greek thinkers, but there flourished in ancient China philosophers of equal antiquity and insight. The ancient Chinese remarkably even seemed to have conceived of the possibility of bodily resurrection, apart from Zoroastrian influence.

But all the religions are unique in many ways and the authors do a collectively fair job of sticking to the prescribed topical outline, though not always in the same order and with uneven coverage, which is mainly a source issue, not one of competence. There is also a welcome conscious effort to discuss the religion of everyday people and not just those represented in 'official' texts. Here archeology is of paramount value.

I have a few gripes. It is difficult to follow some authors on the dating of aspects of the religions because they do not name or do not discuss the nature of the sources relative to the specific tradition or aspect they are discussing. Most of the essays have good maps, but several lack pictures even when there is definite material cultural evidence available. Some essays do not quote or infrequently quote primary sources, although they are often mentioned. More direct quotes from the primary sources when they are textual of course would have been appreciated in these cases.

I hope in an updated edition Hinnells will remedy some of these defects and also include a chapter on Zoroastrianism. The essay on Israel could have probably been discarded or discussed in a broader essay on West Semitic religion including Ugarit (which receives its own lengthy chapter and makes many biblical connections anyway). And for the life of me, it seems some of these scholars cannot spell 'worshiped/worshiper' correctly, rendering it with two 'p's'. How does an expert on religion not get this word right? Very funny, though of course a venial offense and not a serious criticism.

But the book is fairly broad in scope in contrast to, say Johnston 2007 , where only Mediterranean religions are discussed, i.e., those perceived to be directly relevant to the Western and Judeo-Christian traditions. It was a pleasure to read something about ancient China, for example, in the same book where Mesopotamian religion is discussed. There is adequate bibliography at the end of each chapter and an extremely useful and comprehensive index.

I'm happy to have this resource in my collection and with a few significant revisions in a subsequent edition it could be an unbeatable resource for the price in paperback. I learned much in general and am very pleased.

Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, by Daniel Ellsberg

Daniel Ellsberg began his career as the coldest of cold warriors-a U. S. Marine company commander, a Pentagon analyst, and a staunch supporter of America's battle against Communist expansion. But in October 1969, Ellsberg-fully expecting to spend the rest of his life in prison-set out to turn around American foreign policy by smuggling out of his office the seven-thousand-page top-secret study, known as the Pentagon Papers, of U.S. decision making in Vietnam. Now, for the first time, Ellsberg tells the full story of how and why he became one of the nation's most impassioned and influential anti-war activists-and how his actions helped alter the course of U.S. history.

Covering the decade between his entry into the Pentagon and Nixon's resignation, Secrets is Ellsberg's meticulously detailed insider's account of the secrets and lies that shaped American foreign policy during the Vietnam era. Ellsberg provides a vivid eyewitness account of the two years he spent behind the lines in Vietnam as a State Department observer-an experience that convinced him of the hopelessness of Johnson's policies and profoundly altered his own political thinking. As Ellsberg recounts with drama and insight, the release of the Pentagon Papers, first to The New York Times and The Washington Post, set in motion a train of events that ultimately toppled a president and helped to end an unjust war.

Infused with the political passion and turmoil of the Vietnam era, Secrets is at once the memoir of a committed, daring man, an insider's exposé of Washington, and a meditation on the meaning of patriotism under a government intoxicated by keeping secrets.

From Publishers Weekly
Ellsberg's transformation from cold warrior and Defense Department analyst to impassioned antiwar crusader who released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in June 1971 makes a remarkable and riveting story that still shocks 30 years later. Avoiding, for the most part, self-justification and self-aggrandizement, he clearly relates the experiences that led him to reject as arrogant lies the premises six presidents presented to the public and Congress to secure support for the Vietnam War. He describes the disjunction between what he saw during visits to Vietnam in the early and mid-'60s, driving through dangerous Viet Cong-held territory, and what was told to the press and public. And he recalls his first reading of the classified documents later known as the Pentagon Papers, which exposed the motives, in his view unprincipled, behind American involvement in Vietnam. Ellsberg creates page-turning human drama and suspense in both his descriptions of his early experience accompanying U.S. combat missions in Vietnam and his days spent underground evading an FBI manhunt after the Times's publication of the Papers. Another strength of this memoir is Ellsberg's vivid recollections of meetings with prominent policymakers, from Henry Kissinger to Senator William Fulbright, that re-create the deep tensions of the Vietnam era. Ellsberg raises serious ethical questions about how citizens, politicians, the press and officials act when confronted with government actions they consider immoral and perhaps illegal. Ellsberg's own answer is history.

From Library Journal
Before leaking the Pentagon Papers, which documented U.S. foreign-policy failures and deceit in Vietnam from 1945 to 1968, Ellsberg was a gung-ho advisor to the State and Defense departments. One fascinating part of this story is his growing disenchantment with the war during these years. He came to believe that leaking the top-secret papers and other classified documents was a patriotic act that could help end the war. Other fascinating aspects of this account include Ellsberg's frustrated attempts to find a member of Congress who would accept and use the papers to build a case against the war as well as his growing role in the antiwar movement. President Nixon failed in his strong-arm tactics to discredit Ellsberg, and the case against him was dismissed because of the illegal break-in at the office of Dr Lewis Fielding, Ellsberg's psychiatrist. Interestingly, Ellsberg speculates that the break-in by Nixon's "Plumbers" was as much an attempt to blackmail Fielding as it was a gambit to stop Ellsberg. The book suffers somewhat from the overabundance of detail and repetition that also flawed Tom Wells's Wild Man: The Life and Times of Daniel Ellsberg. However, Ellsberg's autobiographical account provides insight into the disturbing abuses of presidential power that plagued the Vietnam/Watergate era. Recommended for public libraries.

From Booklist
Call it "the Gary Cooper factor": pop culture (and pop history) demands a certain modesty (like that of Cooper's "aw shucks" film characters) from American heroes. So Ellsberg hasn't fit comfortably into the American pantheon. His signal contribution also remains controversial: Ellsberg "leaked" the Pentagon Papers, but those voluminous documents were simply a history of the Vietnam War few Americans actually read. They offered few surprises but did confirm the antiwar movement's charge that the government had lied to its citizens. An unlikely whistleblower, Ellsberg was a Harvard economics Ph.D. who shifted between government appointments and the RAND Corporation and spent significant time in Vietnam--a quintessential "defense intellectual." Even after he decided the "top-secret" Pentagon Papers should be released, he spent nearly two years trying to convince various dovish politicians to take the lead. The Pentagon Papers went to the press--the New York Times and, later, the Washington Post and other outlets--only because no one else would reveal them. The Nixon administration's hysterical reaction "justified" a number of the Watergate crimes that brought down Nixon's presidency. In this memoir of his years working first for and then against the U.S. defense establishment, Ellsberg clearly regrets he took action so many years after he realized the Vietnam War could not be won. An important addition to U.S. history in the 1960s and 1970s. Mary Carroll

Rare History
By Amazon Customer
Ellsberg is a driven man--driven toward solving puzzles and righting that which is wrong. The intensity of his intellect and the breadth of his insider experience would have made Daniel Ellsberg an amazing historian of the Vietnam War even if he hadn't become an anti-war activist. The fact that he had--in the end--studied both sides, and that eventually he had access not only to the Pentagon Papers but also the Nixon Whitehouse tapes allowed him to explain the war and its perpetrators with a rare combination of vividness and authority.

Judging from what is written in today's newspapers, the patterns Ellsberg describes in Secrets are repeating themselves in the Iraq War. _Secrets_ deserves to be widely read, as a lesson in courage, as history, and as a warning to those of us who might be tempted to sit back and trust unquestioningly those who would lead us into war then resist bringing us back out.

Spellbinding Recounting Of The Pentagon Papers Story!
By Barron Laycock
After finding this book quite by accident while browsing through the wonderful Concord bookstore the other day, I was astounded to find how relevant and interesting a story author Daniel Ellsberg manages to conjure up after all this time regarding his legendary experience leading up to and including the leaking, release and publication of the infamous "Pentagon Papers' by the New York Times. As he explains early in the long yet fascinating monologue, he fully expected to be sentenced to a long prison sentence for having secreted a copy of the highly classified Department of Defense's official history of the American Government's policy and involvement in Vietnam. The report was a damning confirmation of the worst fears of the anti-war movement, and provided overwhelming evidence of the cynical, manipulative, and deceitful character of our government and its deceit to its own people regarding its involvement.

What surprised Ellsberg most in all of this swirling excitement and activity was his own growing celebrity, and while he spent years fearing the worst for his own admitted culpability in defying criminal statues by stealing and leaking official government secrets, eventually the charges against him were dropped based, among other things, on the revelations of the Nixon's plumber's unit's illegal break-in at Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Ellsberg was an unlikely hero, a graduate of the Harvard University economics doctoral program, a former marine officer turned defense issue intellectual, a frequent visitor to Vietnam who was rankled by the distinct difference between what he was seeing and experiencing during his visits, on the one hand, and what the official American government position regarding what the situation was on the ground on the other.

Based on this growing dissatisfaction and the discovery of the so-called Pentagon papers, a treasure trove of more than 7,000 pages of carefully documented details about the U.S. Government's involvement in Vietnam and its motives, considerations, and actions, Ellsberg tried to enlist the support of a number of Senators and Congressmen in an effort to use the evidence in the Pentagon Papers to undercut the Government's position and thereby end the war itself. Failing to do so, he finally surrendered the documents to the New York Times, which agreed to publish them through a series of daily excerpts (and also later in an abridged best-selling paperback version). The Government tried to stop publication, but was denied the right to do so by the Supreme Court. Of course, with the publication came an increase in public opposition to the war and a recognition of the degree to which the Executive branch and the military had intentionally misled the public regarding the conduct of the war and the situation on the ground for the moiré than 500,000 troops then stationed in-country. Still, it took more than five more years before the American involvement in Vietnam ended.

This is a wonderful book to experience, and in reading it one comes to recognize the formidable skills Ellsberg brings to bear in terms of his amazing recall, eye for details, and ability to successfully juggle a variety of interacting considerations at the same time. This guy is smarter than the average teddy bear, and it is easy to see how difficult a task it would have been for the Department of Defense and the nitwits over in the White House to try to outmaneuver him. I was a bit surprised at some of the personal revelations in the book, and while it is obvious that Mr. Ellsberg has a healthy ego, he manages for the most part to keep it at bay in retelling a story that could have easily have devolved in a retelling of the David against Goliath epic, but which he keeps objective and factual enough to keep the story rolling along as a recounting of the gripping events that transpired more than thirty years ago and helped to turn the tide of public opinion toward the war in Vietnam. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in 20th century American history. Enjoy!

Nine Warhammer Fantasy Stories.
By Detra Fitch
Red Snow (A Gotrek & Felix story) by Nathan Long

The caravan master tells Slayer Gotrek Gurnisson that there is always a fight whenever they travel to market. Seeking a glorious death in battle, Gotrek and his human companion, Felix Jaeger, agree to guard the caravaners. The trek is interrupted by an avalanche. In the aftermath, a priest from a nearby village offers them shelter and tells them of a terrible monster that walks the hills.

**** FOUR STARS! This short adventure will help tide over the legion of Gotrek and Felix fans until the next full-length novel is released. Gotrek's battle against the yeti is told with Nathan Long's unique flair and will entice new readers to look up past titles. A well executed story. ****

The Assassin's Dilemma by David Earle

Clan Famin's Warlord, Glut, hires the services of Clan Eshin to pave the way for an assault on a human encampment. Sneeq Foulblade, a skaven assassin, and his gutter runners agree to infiltrate the camp and assassinate the human engineer. Shortly afterward, Grey Seer Qik demands Sneeq NOT to kill the engineer. To abandon Glut's contract would mean Sneeq's death, but Qik vows the same should it be completed. Can the skaven assassin find a way to survive his decision?

**** FOUR STARS! It is always interesting to view events from the view point of the skaven race. David Earle did very good work on this short story. ****

Rest Eternal by Anthony Reynolds

Calard is a Questing Knight of the Lady (of the Lake). It has been five years since the Bretonnian Knight had taken up his Questing Vows for the Grail. His journey now takes him to a small village located high in the peaks of the Grey Mountains. Calard agrees to slay a wyvern that has been tormenting the villagers. Yet the day after he killed the beast, an identical one appears.

**** FOUR STARS! Many readers will figure out exactly what is happening early in the story. Still, the adventure has an unforeseen twist or two that keeps this tale very intriguing. ****
The Miracle at Berlau by Darius Hinks

Brother Jakob Wolff fails to kill the monster, though it is burned beyond recognition. His acolyte, Ratboy, then listens as Brother Wolff confesses his guilty secrets. However, Ratboy would soon stumble upon the truth of Wolff's past.

*** THREE STARS! I found this to be a simple tale of Wolff's life coming full circle. Pretty interesting. ***

Noblesse Oblige (A Florin & Lorenzo story) by Robert Earl

Florin d'Artaud and Lorenzo le Comte are two merchants from Bordeleaux. For a bit of entertainment they visit the fighting pits; however, they are surprised to see a gladiator fight three of the skaven race. Florin and Lorenzo keep the rat-like vermin from escaping. In doing so, they wind up in the prison. Then Lady Adora arrives and offers them their freedom in exchange for their services in murdering a nobleman.

**** FOUR STARS! Fans of the Florin & Lorenzo series will be utterly delighted with this adventure. Sometimes I believe the duo to be just plain lucky! The Lady Adora makes for a wonderful villainess. I hope to see more of her in the future. A very impressive story. ****

The Last Ride of Heiner Rothstein by Ross O'Brien

Heiner Rothstein of the Rothstein's Pistoliers has died fighting marauders. His son, Wolfram, and the rest of the honour guard were taking Heiner's body for its last ride into Middenheim. They have been hunting down marauders for several months. Now they make camp, excited that they were to enter Middenheim with the captured enemy banner the next day. But things are not always as they seem.

*** THREE STARS! An unexpected twist brings an end to this story. Not much action, but definitely worth your time to read and enjoy. ***

Broken Blood by Paul Kearney

Two years ago General Michael Morgan had been leading his horsemen against Chaos hordes. A daemon prince had been summoned. It captured Michael alive and flew off, deep into Troll Country. His brother, Gabriel, lead the men as they search for their former general. At last the search has ended. But now Gabriel and the men must kill Michael ... if they can.

**** FOUR STARS! An epic battle against a large Chaos host makes up this thrilling short tale. Well written and sound strategies. ****

The Judgement of Crows by Chris Wraight

Long ago Radamus Arforl, one of the mightiest wizards of the Amethyst order fell in battle as he defeated the necromancer of legend named the Master of Crows. Somewhere in the marshes, near the Herrendorf village of which he saved from a plague of walking dead, his mausoleum watches after the source of evil. Yet after centuries, the unquiet dead are rising again. Every night they exit the marshes, attempting to breach the walls of the village. Imperial Master Wizard Katerina Lautermann, answers the village's call for help.

***** FIVE STARS! Death, decay, magic, betrayal, wizard duels and more await readers in this intense tale. During the climatic battle, I simply could not look away from the wrongness of it all. Stunning! *****

Wolfshead (A Brunner the Bounty Hunter story) by C.L. Werner

Brunner of Drakenberg is one of the best bounty hunters in the lands. While bringing in his live captive, he briefly meets Mamma Miranda, a powerful old woman, who gives Brunner the means to save himself from the beast he is soon to meet. Though his captive falls victim to the huge wolf-like creature, Brunner does not. Baron Friederick Hartog has placed a large bounty upon the wolf's head, but Brunner knows it was not a simple wolf he had encountered. Upon hearing of Mamma Miranda, the baron changes the bounty. A fortune would go to the one that captures the old hag and forces her to lift her curse.

***** FIVE STARS! There are times I believe that the character of Brunner the Bounty Hunter is actually the oxymoron known as an honorable sociopath. But I must admit that those deserving Brunner's attention need just such a person to deal with them. An excellent story and the perfect way to end this fabulous anthology. *****

Great Sampling of Warhammer Fantasy Novels
By Ursula K. Raphael
It would be unfair to write a general review of a book with nine different stories, especially when considering the talent of the authors, so I wrote about each one:

**********

Red Snow by Nathan Long is a Gotrek & Felix tale set in the Mountains of Mourn. They're guarding a caravan of merchants because Gotrek is hoping to find his doom along the way, but they're delayed by an avalanche. A Sigmar priest, Father Gessler, invites them to stay in a nearby village while they dig out the mountain pass. He tells them about a monster roaming the mountains, so - of course - Gotrek wants to fight the monster.

Long did an excellent job of writing a new story without disturbing the timeline of the Gotrek & Felix saga. If you haven't already, I recommend reading Shamanslayer.

**********

The Assassin's Dilemma by David Earle was a sweet surprise - I wasn't expecting a Skaven story. This tale takes place years after Skavenslayer, but includes several references to the Battle of Nuln. Sneeq Foulblade of Clan Eshin has been contracted by Warlord Glut to steal human weapons, and kidnap the engineer, Werner Grunhelm. Grey Seer Qik wants to kill Grunhelm himself, so Sneeq is forced to make alternate plans...yet another example of Clan politics undermining the Skaven race.
If you enjoy this Skaven tale, then you should read Grey Seer (Thanquol & Boneripper novel).

**********

Rest Eternal by Anthony Reynolds begins with the last moments of a battle between the knight Calard and a wyvern, in the Grey Mountains - although, those few moments are described over several pages. For the life of me, I didn't see a reason for stretching out the battle, until I read the twist halfway through the story. This was one of the most unpredictable stories I have ever read, and the best fantasy-fiction that I've read in a long time. Reynolds has an amazing imagination. If you like this tale, consider reading Knight Errant.

**********

The Miracle At Berlau by Darius Hinks is a tale concerning a young man nicknamed Ratboy, and his friendship with a Sigmar priest, Brother Wolff. As the two struggle to defeat a creature called The Reaver, details are revealed bit by bit about how the two met, and how they came to be in a blown-up temple. I love that the priest teaching the boy to read, in the past, played a part in the discovery of "The Miracle." It was a nice enough story, but not nearly as much action as I would have expected from a Warhammer tale...although his Warrior Priest was a good read.

**********

Noblesse Oblige by Robert Earl gives us a taste of the Florin & Lorenzo saga. The story unfolds with a watchman happening upon some Skaven (yaay!) in a grain store, presumably up to no good, and quickly moves onto Florin & Lorenzo selling corn to an Empire merchant named Gristwald. Afterwards, Florin & Lorenzo decide to visit a fighting pit that has Skaven as entertainment. After a bad decision on Florin's part (several bad decisions in a row, actually), the two find themselves in the middle of complicated murder plot, which leads to a unique mêlée. One of the best tales in the collection!

**********

In The Last Ride of Heiner Rothstein by Ross O'Brien, Heiner is apparently already dead. The tale is told from the POV of his son, Wolfram. Over half the story is spent describing the unrest among the pistoliers, who have been drinking and telling stories in their campsite. They all seem to be having trouble remembering the details of their previous battle. Eventually, they find themselves fighting again, and that is when Wolfram begins to see people he thought were dead. While the plot twist was slightly predictable, the very end was not at all what I expected.

**********

Broken Blood by Paul Kearney is about two brothers, Gabriel and Michael, separated in battle by Chaos sorcery. Two years later, Gabriel is near the end of a campaign to find out what has become of his brother, and the details of the separation are revealed in Gabriel's flashbacks. Most of the story is pages upon pages of his final battle with the Chaos horde, in which I began to lose interest. By the time he learned what had happened to Michael, I didn't care anymore. Broken Blood failed to impress me as much as the first six stories did. However, the ending wasn't too bad.

**********

The Judgment of Crows by Chris Wraight centers around the Amethyst wizard, Katerina Lautermann, sent to save Herrendorf from the unquiet dead. Unfortunately, she does not have the support or confidence of the villagers. A Sigmar priest, Boris, tells her the mausoleum of another Amethyst wizard may hold the key to saving the village, but when she summons the spirit of the wizard Arfol, she discovers a horrible secret...a decent zombie-fantasy tale. Wraight also wrote Masters of Magic.

**********

Wolfshead by C.L. Werner is a Brunner the Bounty Hunter adventure. I am not a fan of the trilogy, but I still thought the story was well-written. Brunner is not happy about having to keep Victor Schwartz alive to collect his bounty; to make matters worse, while trekking through a dense forest, a witch appears to warn them that they are being hunted. I could see where the story was going right away, but it was still fun to read.

**********

One of the things that I liked best about this collection was the length of the stories. I also enjoyed having so many characters and settings from the world of Warhammer brought into one book. If you're already a fan, you'll recognize a lot of the names, places and time frames...but, if you've never read Warhammer before, this is an excellent book to begin with - you'll have an idea whether or not Warhammer has any fantasy sagas you would enjoy.

More hits than misses
By Amazon Customer
For a compilation of stories, the problem with most of these is the issue that the stories, particularly for the fantasy universe, are just too long to be adequately delivered. When you pick up a Gotrek and Felix novel, you expect it to be 400 pages, rather than just shy of 70. But still, the stories provided are complete and well delivered, and even turn over some stones from parts of the WF universe to make it worthwhile.

The most staying one is The Assassins Dilemma, which is a rare treat given how rare the Skaven storyline is followed. Overall though, only a handful of stories, particularly the G&T and the Brunner shorts don't have much staying power, because they are placed pretty specifically between volumes of the overarching plots. While you know that Gotrek and Felix survive, it would be nice to have more tension than feeling like you're watching a Scooby Doo episode.

Overall, all the stories are worth it, but I honestly preferred the side bar characters, as you didn't honestly know beforehand whether they would make it.

The Politics of Collective Violence (Cambridge Studies in Contentious Politics), by Charles Tilly

Are there any commonalities between such phenomena as soccer hooliganism, sabotage by peasants of landlords' property, road rage, and even the events of September 11? With striking historical scope and command of the literature of many disciplines, this book seeks the common causes of these events in collective violence. In collective violence, social interaction immediately inflicts physical damage, involves at least two perpetrators of damage, and results in part from coordination among the persons who perform the damaging acts. Charles Tilly argues that collective violence is complicated, changeable, and unpredictable in some regards, yet also results from similar causes variously combined in different times and places. Pinpointing the causes, combinations, and settings helps to explain collective violence and also helps to identify the best ways to mitigate violence and create democracies with a minimum of damage to persons and property. Charles Tilly is the Joseph L. Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science at Columbia University. He has published more than twenty scholarly books, including twenty specialized monographs and edited volumes on political processes, inequality, population change and European history.

Review
"The Politics of Collective Violence offers an arsenal of testable hypotheses that have the capacity to render intelligible the actions of statesmen, terrorists, and road-ragers who turn to violence as a means of staking claims, asserting identity, or exacting retribution...Tilly has drawn the subject of violence into the same rational-strategic frame that defines political process theory." useful framework about collective violence
By Arnold
Tilly is probably best known for his theories about state violence, but here he turns to collective or non-state violence. He categorizes collective violence along a spectrum or coordination amongst members and political salience of any damage that occurs. The book is also a tour de force of various types of collective violence (at least circa 2001 in the last edition). Definitely recommended for students of collective violence.

A Must for any Student of Collective Violence
By Student Forever
One reason for political scientists to be wary of the analyses offered by their discipline is that sociologists have always been better at providing contemporary political analysis. Charles Tilly goes even further when he comes as a historical sociologist. In The Politics of Collective Violence, he provides, in a readable fashion, an analysis of collective violence through time and space.

By forcefully advancing the notion that collective violence is best explained when considered as a form of "contentious politics", Tilly dismisses the good versus evil dichotomy that seeks to understand any type of violence including collective violence as steaming from evil. By demonstrating the shortcomings of the type of collective violence analysis available so far ("ideal", "behavioral", and "relational"), he highlights relational analysis to tells us that it does not matter what people believe or what their genetic predispositions to violence are for collective violence. This is important because now we recognize individual responsibility without being able to raise anybody's moral superiority (p. 8).

The categories of collective violence provided in The Politics of Collective Violence (Violent rituals; coordinated destruction; opportunism; brawls; individual aggression--indeed; individual aggression is considered part of collective violence; scattered attacks; and broken negotiations) seem to include all types of collective violence known so far. Showing the functions of different actors, namely, the "political entrepreneurs" who differentiate between who is "us" and who is "them", the "violent specialists" who have tools necessary for carrying out damage (corporal, etc.), and, perhaps implicitly, the ordinary people who get co-opted, Tilly demonstrates how complex the task of identifying who is responsible is. This is complemented when he depicts how different types of state governments lead to different types of outcomes in collective violence.

Do not expect Tilly to be precise when it comes to facts (as for example when he calls the current president of Rwanda Paul Mugabe (the real name is Paul Kagame, or when he calls Hutus who opposed Habyarimana regime "dissidents" as if the regime was totalitarian like North Korea for instance and not authoritarian); however, whether or not he misses a fact or two does not affect the overall argument of the book--collective violence must be understood as a form of politics--is not affected. That is the power of history-based theory in explanation. Theory-based arguments are useful especially when one is dealing with policy recommendations such as policy recommendations for reducing collective violence as is the case in this book.

Tilly's book is a must for any student of collective violence. Different people will judge Tilly on, for instance, the type of boundaries that he stresses and other he does not, but, from now on, anyone studying collective violence from anywhere, anytime, will have to struggle with the arguments in The Politics of Collective Violence.

Nevertheless we can see easily that under the same regime but in different areas
By Huiu-wen Huang
This book propose clear scheme to analyses different forms of collective violence under different regimes. Nevertheless we can see easily that under the same regime but in different areas, the salience of collective violence can be very different. Theory always need to elaborate, I think.
