Thoroughly entertaining

Gothic rock superstar Tyler Curtis is something of a musical prodigy. He's only twenty years old, but for the last two years, he has had the music world in an uproar with his good looks, his abrasive personality, his hard drinking and doping ways, and his ceaseless womanizing. His fans adore him, and women throw themselves at him constantly. When Jordan Braxton's sister Rebecca wins two tickets to a Tyler Curtis concert, she insists that he accompany her. She has her sites set on bagging the delectable Mr. Curtis and figures that any female companion would just be a distraction. Although initially revolted by the morals and attitude of the rocker, Jordan tags along. And at the concert wrap party, he meets up with a Tyler Curtis that is completely unlike his expectations. The man he meets is shy, sweet, friendly and lisps adorably, and although he has always had a reputation of being cold and somewhat standoffish with strangers, Jordan is bewitched by the younger man. It take only a little conversation, a shared pizza, and a kissing session for him to fall completely in love.

He may appear tough on the outside, but Alec Tyler is actually a fragile soul. Orphaned at seventeen, verbally and physically abused by his manager, cut off from the world and forced to play a role, Alec is overworked, exhausted, and hungry for friendship. It doesn't take much for him to fall for Jordan, who treats him like a person and not an idol or a punching bag. Even though the two men have found love together, fate contrives to make life difficult for them. Someone is trying to extort millions of dollars out of the young musician, and they are not above preying on Alec's weaknesses to do so. In addition, Alec suffers from epilepsy, and he has been suffering from episodes of increasing frequency and duration lately. Just as they begin to dig Alec out of this nasty situation, the world comes crashing down around them in a different way, threatening not only Alec's career but also his life.

The Curtis Reincarnation by Zathyn Priest is about a man who puts up a front for the world while at the same time suffering enough loss and abuse to fell a man twice his size. It is a novel of love, pain, and poetic justice, and it has enough emotional appeal to satisfy even the most demanding of readers. This well-written story will hook you in from the very beginning and will keep you involved until the finale. The narration is smoothly executed, and the plot progresses at a consistent pace. It doesn't bog down in the middle, and even when the action is in a bit of a holding pattern, the story still manages to be compelling.

Mr. Priest has created a cast of main characters in this novel that will grab your affections from the very beginning, and his villains are so extremely rotten that you will love to hate them. Indeed, you will undoubtedly be plotting revenge on these malefactors right along with the heroes. The main characters are studies on contrast within themselves. Alec suffers physical torment, psychological pain, and ill health yet at the same time finding great joy in his relationship with Jordan. Although he has been forced to act the bad boy his entire musical career, his true nature comes out after he decides to split with his manager, and his humor, intelligence, and charm make him positively glow in the public eye. Jordan projects a cold and untouchable, even obnoxious, air to those who don't know him, but when his affections are engaged, he becomes a dedicated caring lover and an indulgent brother. Rebecca projects an air of mischief and calls herself "sexually amicable" (a response to her brother fondly calling her a slut), but once she gets past her pique that Alec chose her brother over herself, she becomes his fast friend. This doesn't keep her from taking advantage of his wealth and hospitality when it is offered, of course, because champagne in the limo and room service at a luxury hotel are simply not to be passed up.

This novel runs the gamut of emotions - from humor to anger to grief and despair. It is at times funny and at times intense, but it is always extremely absorbing. You will laugh, and you will cry (ok, I cried... so sue me! I'm a sucker for this stuff.), and you will be thoroughly entertained. Excellent job, Mr. Priest. I will undoubtedly be seeking out more of your work in the future.

Fast-paced with Flaws!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It moved along and taking us behind the scenes of the world's most popular and lonely rock star. The author painted a rich picture of the star on stage while giving us the grim story of his life and his manager's verbal and physical abuse.

But when Curtis sees Jordan and vice versa it was love at first sight. It was a pleasant journey of their blossoming love for each other amid the turmoil of intrigue, blackmail and bitter memories for Tyler Curtis. Add to that his physical condition and I feel it is a most touching and well written love story.

Jordan and Alec(Tyler) become inseparable and so the story goes. No disappointments, no flaws IMO.

The only negative (if one could call it that) is I found the Jordan's little sister a bit overdone to the point of insufferable and obnoxious.

but other than that an excellent novel.

I fell in love with Zathyn Priest. He has an amazing way of telling a story about people who have such difficult disabilities and showing you how they can deal with everyday life. I was in tears reading this book. I also just finished his next book The Slayers Apprentice. It up held this amazing mans ability to write.

Grade 6 Up Freedman's book has two levels of appeal: that of the wonderfully conceived and vividly executed paintings (full-color reproductions of stunning paintings by such they-were-there artists as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Albert Bierstadt, uncluttered by inclusion of photographic every-detail), and that of an informative, accessible text. The title may by itself mislead some, as Freedman presents not a story or description of one hunt but descriptions of the many ways that buffalo hunts were madeby Indians, and later by the whites whose ferocious, firearm slaughter of the ``shaggies''as they were calledbrought the species to near extinction. This is superior to two recent picture books on the general subject of buffalo: Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Buffalo: the American Rison Today (Clarion, 1986) and Cary B. Buffalo Hunt by R. Freeman: A review

Author, Russell Freeman, writes an informational (nonfiction) book targeting grades 3 - 7 about the interdependence of the Plains Indian Tribes and the North American Bison. This book documents a way of life few non-Indian people were privileged to see. The bison shaped the culture of these tribes, the tribes usually killed only what they needed and used all parts of the animal. The various tribes of the plains husbanded the bison herds and the land on which they grazed to insure the survival of this essential source of food and shelter. The buffalo hunt was accompanied by supplication to the spirits and shaman of the tribes and was participated in by all, though only men killed buffalo. The job of others was to clean the kill and cure the meat and hides. The author describes more than one hunting technique. Also, he explains how the Indians developed into skillful horsemen as they evolved from hunting on foot to the use of wild horses.
The slaughter of bison populations as whites encroached upon and gradually took over Indian lands resulted in the end of a way of life and the near annihilation of the Plains Indian Tribes in the 50+ years from around 1830 to 1888.
The book is illustrated with reproductions of original paintings and drawings of the period by artists such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer who were adventurer-artists traveling alone, or nearly so, through regions that only a few fur trappers and traders had seen before this time.
Freeman has crafted a book with a balanced combination of illustration and information. His book would surpass the most rigorous standards for great nonfiction. It presents information objectively and without bias or opinion and uses beautiful works of art for illustration - the art of both the white and the Indian, from the period under scrutiny. It explains a way of life that has been lost yet does not belabor the point, marginalize the people, or sentimentalize the topic. I would recommend this book highly. It could be used for art projects in schools as well as for factual writing assignments. The author has written other respected informational books for children, e.g., Lincoln: A photobiography, and another about the Wright brothers.

Noriko Ishihara is Associate Professor of English as a Foreign Language at Hosei University, Japan and leads language teachers’ professional development courses in the US and Japan. Her work has appeared in various journals and she is co-author of a Japanese language textbook with Magara Maeda, Advanced Japanese: Communication in Context (2010).

Andrew D. Cohen is Professor in Second Language Studies at the University of Minnesota. He has had many encounters with pragmatics, as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural development with Aymara Indians in Bolivia, a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil, and a professor in Israel for many years. He is co-editor with Ernesto Macaro of Language Learner Strategies (2007).
