A fantastic guide to a fantastic cooking video series

Watching Greg Easter's cooking videos on YouTube is a bit like peeking into the kitchen of a fine restaurant and learning how the chef made your food taste so good. I've been a fan of Chef Easter's YouTube channel CookingInRussia for several years now, and I am always learning something new about food and professional techniques that no one else demonstrates. These are not dumbed-down recipes made easy for the home cook. These are for the home cook who wants to ramp up their knowledge, skill, and enjoyment of making food with incredible flavors. Chef Easter is also quick to reply to questions asked on the channel and readily shares his knowledge and skills. It is obvious that much preparation goes into the videos, which are easy to follow and understand. His recipes are impressive

The YouTube channel companion books are a great idea, and an excellent addition to the YouTube videos. It's a unique idea and shows a level of commitment that goes beyond the video.

Chef Easter has made many improvements to Volume 2 of the channel companion series. In this volume, the complete recipe is included with the ingredient list and the procedure. Recipes can be prepared without having to follow along with the video while cooking.

Just seeing how a great recipe is prepared would be enough, but Greg Easter takes the extra step of teaching exactly why certain techniques and ingredient combinations work to take flavor to the next level. Volume 2 starts out with a section that covers how flavors are produced, such as the chemistry behind flavor development (including Bacon Chemistry) and details about flavor ingredients, flavor pairings, and detailed information about herbs and spices. He also expands on subjects touched upon in the video series, such as steak tenderness.

Chef Easter is the real deal and a rarity in the food video world. He gives real recipes based on real science and professional techniques that the home chef can not get anywhere else. Since Food Network shifted from education to entertainment (a point the Chef readily makes), there are few places to get sound cooking advice at a professional level. Many "blog chefs" on YouTube are quick to steer the viewer wrong with crazy ingredients and techniques.

Many CookingInRussia recipes are now my family favorites, and I have made some of them many times. I might not make every recipe Chef Easter has, but I do learn something every time I watch the video. I can't thank him enough for the food education I have gotten from his videos.

All his cook books deserve space on your kitchen counters. His cookbooks are the only cook books that stay in my kitchen all the time. And I have an entire bookcase for the rest in our study. He has the best recipe for whatever you are looking for... I promise

This book really helped me in my journey of what life after death meant according to the Word. I find this book to be very informative and I would recommend it to anyone who has lost a saved loved one and who are having problems understanding salvation.

Reasons to Believe

I read this book in the hardback edition when it was called FACING DEATH (AND THE LIFE AFTER), and all these years later, I still myself talking about it.

Around that time, I attended a wedding where a member of the bride's family died of a heart attack at the reception (it was as bad as it sounds, believe me). But he didn't die right away. And he spoke before he was gone. It was obvious by what he said and how he said it that he was telling us what he could see: what lies ahead.

Billy Graham, a man who has presided over many deathbeds in his long career as a preacher, writes of his experiences at such moments. And it was stunning to me to read of the similarities.

I've read several of Dr. Graham's book and I've been struck at the depth and complexity of his writings. As an evangelist, he keeps his messages simple and straightforward, but as a writer, he can delve into his subjects more deeply and more thoughtfully.

It's a great book that gives you so much to think about.

And find comfort in.

An important book for all Christians to read

This book is not about the hereafter in the sense that it doesn't go into extreme detail as to what life will be like in the hereafter and then from there, to the New Heavens and the New Earth. For that sort of details account and examination, always within a literal Biblical point of view, I would suggest Alcorn's Heaven. This book, another masterfully explored book by Billy Graham, focuses on the here and now in such a way as to examining out outlook toward that day when we die (or even better, thank the Lord, when He comes and Raptures the church). What does it mean in this, now, 21st century to live and to die? What are we to make of the culture of death that we see in the media and across the United States--from the tragedy of the late Ms. Shiavo to abortion on demand and on to euthanasia for our elderly for any old cause or reason? Basically such deaths come about because they are convenient, not based on literal Christian point of view toward the meaning of life and the dignity of dying and death. Graham asks and uses the Bible to answer questions such as "what does it mean to die as a Christian" verses "what does it mean to die without hope" (i.e. without Jesus Christ in your life as your Savior and King). For those who are dying with Jesus as the Savior, as examined by Graham, there is peace even if the death is in the face of persecution by those who do not see the light. For those who are dying without, well, there is only a slow decline into darkness, as Graham explains using the truth of the Bible. Thus, Mr. Graham is not afraid to ask questions nor is he afraid to look for answers through the written words of the Lord and through those He has touched through the ages to be His messengers, great and small. I would suggest anyone to take this book and seriously read it, examine what it has to say about death, dying, and eternity...work it into reading such books as Deadline and Heaven by Randy Alcorn...and really then falling on your hands and knees for a true talk with the Lord. Here and now you need to understand the eternal truths of living and dying and eternity. Graham points the way for the reader to go on and to use the Bible so that it shows the reader the foundations of truth and of forever.

At the beginning of the Second World War, Koestler was living in the south of France working on Darkness at Noon. After retreating to Paris he was imprisoned by the French as an undesirable alien even though he had been a respected crusader against fascism. Only luck and his passionate energy allowed him to escape the fate of many of the innocent refugees, who were handed over to the Nazis for torture and often execution. Scum of the Earth is more than the story of Koestler's survival. His shrewd observation of the collapse of French determination to resist during the summer of 1940 is an illustration of what happens when a nation loses its honour and its pride.

About the Author
Juif hongrois ne a Budapest en 1905, Arthur Koestler fait ses etudes a Vienne, puis devient journaliste en Palestine. Revenu en Europe, il adhere au Parti communiste allemand, trouvant la une reponse a la menace nazie, mais egalement seduit par l'utopie sovietique. Il part un an en URSS, puis participe a la guerre civile espagnole. A partir de 1938, ayant rompu avec le Parti communiste, il combattra sans relache le regime stalinien, notamment a travers son roman majeur, Le Zero et l'Infini. A partir de 1940, il vit en Angleterre, ou il se suicidera avec sa femme en mars 1983. Son oeuvre de romancier, philosophe, historien et essayiste lui vaut une renommee mondiale.

...and it works as a memoir, too!

Arthur Koestler's memoir about his experiences during the beginning of the Second World War is interesting from a historical standpoint. Koestler finds himself all over Europe, in and out of internment camps, encountering people from all over of all classes. Koestler's experience is interesting because the way he was treated was not the norm, it was the product of his unique background and situation, but it still represents the wide range of possible experiences during this historically uncertain time. The level that it succeeds on most, however, is a personal one. Koestler is a damn witty, talented author, who knows how to tell a story. Despite the subject matter he finds much work with. One can't help but smile at he way he describes the inbreed locals of a small village or the way he personifies his car. As interesting as the historical and stylistic elements is his description of himself (clearly a flawed man with a drinking problem) and his unlikely relationship with a younger woman he wasn't meant to end up with. It may be a comparatively obscure piece of literature, but it's certainly one worth reading.

The France-1940 as a true image of the World-2013.

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

What I said for the paperback!

ONE of the greatest books to come out of the second world war now carries a tragic irony. The reverberations of its author's suicide in 1983 spill over into one's reading of it.

In 1939, Koestler was living in the South of France working on Darkness At Noon. Moving to Paris to enlist with the Allies he was, along with thousands of others who had fought Fascism around Europe, imprisoned as an undesirable alien. Life in the camp, which German emigres testified to being comparable with Dachau, is illuminated by a writer whose humanity, optimism and intelligence shine on every page.
