Mark J. P. Anson, PhD, CAIA, is a Managing Partner at Oak Hill Investment Management, LP. Dr. Anson previously served as President and Executive Director of Investment Services at Nuveen Investments, Chief Executive Officer at Hermes Pension Management Limited, and Chief Investment Officer at California Public Employees' Retirement System. He has published over 100 research articles in professional journals, has won two Best Paper Awards, is the author of six financial textbooks, and sits on the editorial boards of several financial journals.
Donald R. Chambers, PhD, CAIA, is the Associate Director of the Level 1 Curriculum at the CAIA Association and is the Walter E. Hanson/KPMG Professor of Finance at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Dr. Chambers previously served as the Director of Alternative Investments at Karpus Investment Management.
Keith H. Black, PhD, CAIA, is the Associate Director of the Level II Curriculum at the CAIA Association. He was previously an Associate at Ennis Knupp and, before that, an Assistant Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology.
Hossein Kazemi, PhD, CAIA, is a Cofounder of and the Program Director for the CAIA Association. Informative, but not intuitive for learning purposes

This material is required reading for CAIA level 1. The book covers a lot (I learned a lot of valuable information) but the writing style could be more straightforward for learning. It is written like a research paper, not like a textbook. There are few diagrams - instead, everything is explained in lengthy paragraphs.
The book is not well-organized. There is a lot of jumping back and forth between related concepts, and the same material gets covered in several different places within the book.
My biggest issue was that there are barely any practice questions.

A great reference guide for AI

This book contains all of the material covered on the CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) Level 1 Exam. The material is neatly organized, and very easy to navigate, but the paper it is printed on is a bit thin, so be careful when using a highlighter as it tends to bleed through to the other side of the page quite badly.
It's study material, and it's been designed so that each section of the book matches a section on the exam. You won't be studying any unnecessary items, and by the time you're done with the book you'll know a lot more about Hedge Funds, Private Equities, and the various other types of investments that are classified "alternative investments" (you'll also find out what makes an investment "alternative"). It gives the reader a full view of how Alternative Investments work, from organization, to tax laws, right down to day-to-day operations in some cases, so that your knowledge goes far beyond that of a casual observer.
If you're taking the CAIA exam, I can't see you passing without it. If you're not taking the CAIA exam and just want to learn about AIs, you can still benefit from this manual.

Excellent book, plain explanations, worth read it even without the pressure of CAIA exam.
However I expected more examples, potentially end of chapter tests.
I definitely recommend it!
