Ultimate Survival

I Am Rosemarie is a fascinating tale of a Jewish girl who survives the Holocaust, and finds the true meaning of life while in a concentration camp. This book is of the wonderfully unusual sort for she unlike most Polish Jews was never sent to a death camp. The tale sent chills of bitter reality up my spine. It Shows the true life in a Nazi camp, where your fingers run cold with blood, your stomachs perpetually growl, and your life is forever affected. Rosemarie was a very naturalistic character, not all strong and brave , but scared and selfish because her life was so awful. The gawking 14 year old grows strong and learns to make friends though she is boiling with hurt. She lived in Poland, and did all the things we do. She had special toys, belongings and so on. But all that was taken away from her when she left for Westerbork. The camps she lived in were realistic in each describing sentence dramatic horror was conveyed. This book is not too exciting or suspenseful but the history it represents cannot be praised enough. I have to say my favorite part in this book is when she realizes herself and says, "Suddenly it didn't matter that I didn't have a state or a home at that moment . It didn't matter that I didn't Know what life lay before me." Then I yelled to the butterfly " I am Rosemarie." I love this part because it shows after maturing she really has found the meaning of life and her true self. The theme of this story has to be that through hardship , suffering , and pain thy inner self shall be made. "a long time ago I looked in front of a bathroom mirror and didn't know who I was but now I do."
The writer's style was steady throughout the book presenting no true climax but making you realize the truth about the Holocaust. Overall this book was wonderful, and filled with true meaning . " who am I, I am Rosemarie!"

I read I am Rosemarie because I wanted to know what it was like to be in a camp, from a twelve-year-olds view. It turned out to be a very interesting and fast read. It was about a twelve-year-old girl, Rosemarie, and her family. Rosemarie and her family are forced to go from one camp to the next. Here is a summary of I am Rosemarie:
The book starts off taking place in a quiet neighborhood in Amsterdam. But right after Rosemarie's 12th birthday Amsterdam was invaded by Germany. Rosemarie's family was forced to live in a ghetto with many other people (all Jews). Rosemarie made one friend, a blind and deaf girl who taught her never to despair.
One afternoon, a person came and told them to go to a camp called Westerbork. Of course they go. Westerbork is horrible! Rosemarie hates it there. She wants to leave. She gets her wish except one tiny factor. They're going to another camp called Bergen-Belsen. If at all possible it had worse conditions than Westerbork! Two years later, they moved again to yet another camp. Rosemarie only spent about a year or a little longer at Biberach, the last camp. Biberach wasn't all that bad compared to the last camps. It had good food, real food. They had more freedom there, but they weren't free.
The whole time Rosemarie was at the camps Rosemarie and her family never gave up hope. Read I am Rosemarie to find out if Rosemarie can survive through the rest of the war. Will she ever be free again?

How would you feel if you were a teenage girl struggling to survive in one of Hitler's camps during the Holocaust where Gestapo officers would find pleasure in watching you die? I Am Rosemarie tells you the story of a teenage girl and her troubles of growing up in Hitler's camps. This book explains how the problems and shortages started out being nothing at all and grew and grew until it turned into a mass of killing and war. Rosemarie is a teenage Jew struggling to survive in Hitler's camps.
A story of truth, justice, lies, friendship, and death. I was surprised at how I could never put the book down. There are surprises around every corner. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read. Read I Am Rosemarie and you will have a different understanding of the Holocaust and how awful it truly was!

Alexander Lowen, M.D., is a world-renowned psychiatrist and leading practitioner of Bioenergetic Analysis -- the revolutionary therapy that uses the language of the body to heal the problems of the mind. A former student of Wilhelm Reich, he developed Bioenergetic Analysis and founded the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis. One of the very best bioenergetics books

Thorughly loved this book. I got a much greater understanding of the oedipal problem and how important the understanding is to regaining emotional health. It's the tip of the whole rotten enchilada of neurosis! It's like an iceberg! 95 percent of our oedipal issues are submerged in or subconscious, waiting to be resolved. Then a person we want to be intimate with comes along just like the Titanic and slams into the frozen mass below the surface and we realize, hopefully, just how big and solid that iceberg really was. I also really liked the parts about the nature of fate. It seems like a strange subject to be in a psychology book but Dr. Lowen has bravely approached how we end up manifesting our subconscious drives over and over again for better or worse, and how we can use the awareness for better instead of worse. It's that pesky repitition compulsion again!

Small case studies are integrated into the book and it progresses on explaing the nature and depth of the oedipal problem. It is never boring and not so technical that it is difficult to read. On the contrary, it is warm and conversational, but fully reveals the gravity and seriousness of resolving these issues so the we may experience love, pleasure and pain with the full response of our bodies and cooperation of the ego. Let's not live in our heads anymore people! Strongly reccomend this book. It is also nicely bound and printed.

I love to read books like this book, because in reading such a book, one is free to ask questions, and demand the best of the author.
Alexander Lowen gives you so much information in this book on the beginnings of frustrations, limitations, rejections and anger, in a way that makes you say, "Yeah! That is how it really is."
This book, like Lowen's other books, are not light reading, but instead insists that you look deeply into your heart and claim your feelings.
This book is also not a trendy "self-help" book, but instead a book replete with clinical and real life examples that you will find yourself growing, as you read this book.
This is an author who I would love to meet, and just be fully in the moment with, without much dialogue - just to share a thank you for writing information that helps us all to explore the human condition.

I recommend this book to anybody interesting in learning how muscular tensions, in an unconsious way, can severely affect the quality of life. It contains lots of information about how muscles hold back emotions.

"Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam: A Bicycle Tour Through War, Genocide, and Forgiveness" is a memoir from Tim & Cindie Travis as they recount their ride through Southeast Asia and their particular adventures and misadventures. An exciting story well dotted with photographs, "Down the Road in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam" is a choice read for armchair travelers, highly recommended.

FANTASTIC AS USUAL

This is the second of the Travis' books i have and i've had their first book as an audio book.
Makes an interseting read though it is a tad light on after reading the EXCELLENT two books by Alastair Humphries.
I was very impressed with the speedy delivery to me here in Australia - about the same time it takes a book to be delivered when bought domestically - very impressive indeed.
Happy shopper yet again.

A Delightful Read

Some books tell a tale. Others provide a perspective on history. Others reveal intriguing plots, high adventure and fascinating locales.
This one does it all, and is a delightful read, to boot.
For anyone who lived through the tumult of WWII or who wishes a fascinating perspective on the events of the past half-century which today shape our future, this volume presents a master storyteller and participant at his best. Long an acknowledged expert in international business and finance, Saint Phalle departs his scholarly dissertations to wander with the reader through episodes of a fascinating life at the center of tumultuous world events -- whether at war, with the OSS in Asia, in the boardrooms of an evolving post-war Europe or with some of the more interesting figures of modern events.
His generous narrative is compelling, and is touched by his wisdom and wit.
This meaty work is both rewarding reading, and a volume which invited this reader to return and re-read a number of its passages. I only hope that the author has another volume up his sleeve, as it is clear to me that he has many other remarkable stories to tell, and I am anxious to read them all!

A tasty & detailed memoir of the 20th Century

This is a delightful memoir and a very good read. The Twentieth Century sweeps through this book in all directions. Yet Saint Phalle manages to render a charming and intimate account of everything from the Roaring Twenties doings of his French aristocratic family to Depression life as a willful, impecunious college student who happened to find work tutoring the family that owns The New York Times. The author was an American spy in wartime China, an international corporate lawyer in postwar America, a flirtatious widower at the dawn of the Sixties, and an economic observer whose previous books contain a lot of good history, not to mention prescient and frightening intimations about what is happening to today's dollar.
Saint Phalle visited Dien Bien Phu as an American agent years before France's defeat there. He knew JFK and that President's methmaster "Doctor Feelgood." He was at Jerusalem's King David Hotel when Menachem Begin & Yitzhak Shamir blew it up. He was in Moscow the day of the attempted coup against Mikhail Gorbachev, toured the rebel Parliament before it was reduced by force. He helped overturn Tammany Hall in Fifties New York, served on Jimmy Carter's ExIm Bank Board, oversaw construction of a resort hotel in the Virgin Islands, got Brigitte Bardot to play with a hula-hoop on the Champs Elysees so a medical supplies client could sell its defective plastic tubing. His sense of humor prompted a few excellent gaffes along the way; he broaches that bombing at a lunch with Prime Minister Begin. Saint Phalle rarely plays victim when everything goes wrong and he credits a lot of his success to good luck.
He's a very good writer. SAINTS, SINNERS AND SCALAWAGS welcomes us in a relaxed and informative style. Saint Phalle has a way of presenting colorful vignettes with economy. Even when he writes about business, his stories move well; he likes interesting people and his career path took him through a lot of moral minefields in fascinating places. His writing is both dry and suggestive, and he customarily leaves us wanting more. He has the taste to leave a lot of things unsaid and the skill to let us know what they are. At twice the length, this would be a very readable book.
Nothing less than a delightful read!

If de Saint Phalle is difficult to define in simple terms, so is his new book,"Saints, Sinners and Scalawags: a lifetime in Stories". The memoire is a collection of fascinating tales offering the reader a look into a spectacularly adventurous life. Meeting the gentlemanly former corporate lawyer and investment banker, one might not imagine he would write a first person account that includes shrunken heads, murder in Hong Kong, sabotage and fortunetellers. Many of the people de Saint Phalle has encountered are those who shaped our political landscape during the second half of the 20th century. Saint Phalle is a member of one of France's oldest families traced back to the 9th century, served in the OSS in China during the war, was decorated for bravery and received France's highest award, The Legion of Honor.

If you grew up fundamentalist and no longer are you can identify

Identifying with Calvin Becker in Portofino is easy for those who grew up fundamentalist, but are no longer in that particular camp. I recall a conversation with a cousin a couple of years ago which detailed the same kinds of experiences Calvin had. Since I grew up only half fundamentalist (mother was father wasn't) I was spared some of Calvin's angst, but was subjected to other types (my father was obviously among the "unsaved.")

I have appreciated Frank's work from the days when he was known as Franky. A lot of people associate his father with the sort of fundamentalist preacher that is portrayed in Portofino, but actually Francis Schaeffer encouraged his son to watch Fellini films and encouraged his forays into film making. Francis Schaeffer was outspoken against the list mentality in fundamentalism (see True Spirituality). It was Francis and Edith Schaeffer who encouraged many of my generation of fundamentalists to be more open to culture. I think that to assume that the Beckers are merely loosely fictionalized Schaeffer's is to not pay attention to things that Frank himself has written about his parents as well as things that Edith and Susan have revealed about the family. Francis Schaeffer once said that if we expect perfection or nothing we will get nothing. He would have hated a hagiography of his life. Towards the end of his life he was as distressed as his son at the direction that evangelical Christianity was moving in.

It certainly is amusing to see how Frank has taken his father's temper tantrums (documented by Edith) in which a flower pot routinely got thrown and encorporated it into the fictional character of Rev. Becker. I'm sure that there are pieces of his mother there as well (although I suspect that his maternal grandmother may be more to the point - since I never saw Edith in action I can't be certain of that). He even pokes fun at himself since he was a late reader.

Frank certainly got to see plenty of fundamentalist families like the Beckers as he was growing up. It certainly appears his mother grew up in one (his grandather wrote an empassioned tract on minced oaths - darn for damn was no better and also earned a mouth full of soap). His caricature of fundamentalism rings more true than a lot of people would suspect. However, Frank didn't grow up to reject Christianity. He found his way into a more historical form of Christian faith in the Greek Orthodox church.

Nearly every branch of Christianity (even I suspect the Orthodox) have pietists in their midst. Nearly every branch of Christianity has those believers who don't appreciate art, music, or literature that isn't explicitly proselytizing. Nearly every branch of Christianity also has believers who realize that art isn't necessarily about proselytizing. Much Ado About Nothing, Chaucer's Miller's Tale, Flannery O' Connor's Wise Blood, were all written by believing Christians, but they are all classed as great literature and are read with appreciation by people who don't share their author's faith.

You can read Portofino as a former fundamentalist and nod knowingly. You can read it as a non-believer and have it reinforce your ideas about fundamentalists. You can even read it as a fundamentalist and have it challenge your ideas about how to convey your faith to your kids and the world around you. The Beckers truly want to share their faith, they really do care about the lost. They simply have been handicapped by some of their subcultural baggage. Maybe what they really needed to do was go to L'Abri???

I think that people who have appreciated the Schaeffer's encouragement to reject the list mentality and appreciate good art will find Portofino an interesting read. I think those who simply found in Schaeffer an ally for their right wing politics (he actually wasn't as much of an ally as they think) and appreciated him for his strong stand for the Bible may find Portofino uncomfortable. But the people who find Portofino uncomfortable probably weren't happy that Francis Schaeffer was encouraging students from Christian colleges to view Satyricon back in the late 60's. Frank's work is not his father's, he isn't just a chip off the old block. But to see him as simply a son who has totally rejected his parents is to misread the situation, at least it seems so to me as I read Frank's work, Edith's work, and Susan's work.

In the final analysis Portofino is a wickedly funny book and a lovely look at an Italy that I would love to see (I suspect it is now covered with Golden Arches and Ben and Jerry's).

I'm looking forward to reading the last book in the trilogy and Frank's new military books.

Like a script of my childhood

This novel reads like a script of my childhood. My family never went to exotic locations like Portofino, but I lived this very same life and heard these same words. Even if you didn't have these types of experience and thus cannot directly relate, this is still a great little novel in it's own right. It is well-written and entertaining. Too bad the movie was never made. It would have been a good one. Highly recommended.

Fantastic

"Portofino" is a story about a boy's annual summer vacation with his family, headed by two alarmingly religious yet all-too human parents. This coming-of-age tale wrapped me around its little finger on Page One and did not let go until the very end, which came much too quickly. I bought it at an airport bookstore and read most of it during a short flight, finishing it (instead of unpacking) when I got home. Schaeffer has drop-dead perfect pitch for the rhythms of family life, which he captures in warm, compassionate, and seamless storytelling prose. I especially appreciated the way he blends family humor and pain (even abuse) into a uniquely personal yet totally universal mood of adolescent yearning. This book is poignant and incredibly funny (my frequent guffaws had people turning heads on the plane) and I would recommend it to anyone who loves to get pulled into a book you can't put down until you're done.

Information-laden. Comes with great art too.

[[VIDEOID:mo1VL6P855XI245]]EVE: Source is a nice book that fills in the backstory of the Eve Online. Old-timers will probably get the most out of this information-laden guide to the sci-fi universe.

The book doesn't talk about the game, but it covers the lore, about 10 years worth since the game was released in 2003.

The content is grouped into the different existing factions, with a little introduction to New Eden. Each faction is presented with history, politics, traits and people. It's pretty much a world-building kind of book. What we have here is a tightly woven sci-fi lore collection.

It's a large 200-page hardcover. I've read other reviews commenting on the book's spine. It uses perfect binding, stitched and glued. Mine looks alright so far.

Oh, there are many beautiful sci-fi art included. Spaceships, worlds, glamour shots of the factions. Very detailed and high quality artworks.

Recommended to all EVE players.

Good Summary of a SciFi universe

The book is filled with information about the universe of Eve Online. Part history book and part almanac it holds much more information then I would have guessed for the price. Each empire also has a short story that provides some nice background.

EVE: Source doesn't talk about the game itself at all, so I would recommend it as a standalone book for someone who is interested in Sci-fi world building.

DONT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION

it would be lower if I could. information may be wonderful, and the pictures are good, but the kindle edition is an utter piece of slapped together trash. it isn't text. it is all an image, so no resizing the abysmally small text. Unless you have a coffee table book sized tablet it is not worth it. I have never been more disappointed in a $16.00 purchase.
