Stand up to your company's CFO

I don't usually write reviews but thought I should here as a public service to people like me who get bullied by smug CFOs. If you are like me, you don't spend your time reading financial books. If you do, I wouldn't recommend this book to you. I mean I think the book is good but you'd probably think it was beneath you. This book is meant for people who don't work in a "finance" job, however, who want to know their way around a spreadsheet as necessary. This book has definitely helped me talk my way around my company's financial reports and it could yours as well.

I'm too busy working to spend my day analyzing spreadsheets and financial reports. Yet, I'm responsible for delivering the numbers that my boss wants on a few key financial measures. Sometimes I don't always hit my monthly P&L numbers and that's when the information I learned in this book becomes the most valuable. After reading the book I know enough about financial reports to sound intelligent. When the CFO and my boss conduct their monthly review of my key benchmarks, they always seem to focus on the number in the spreadsheet that fell short of their expectations. I used to sweat these monthly meetings, but now I can point out other numbers in the income statement and balance sheet that influence my benchmark.

I read the first edition of this book after receiving it at a company seminar. I just finished this updated version after loading it onto my Kindle. The most recent book added new material about the recent financial crises and expanded upon accounting literacy to include in-depth review of some new financial reports. I liked it. Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

kudos to the authors!!!

Finance Can be Fun

Berman and Knight have done the impossible -- make the topic of finance clear, interesting, even fun! Finance is not one of my favorite topics. I typically nod off when engaged in finance-related conversations or sitting in yet another, interminable budget meeting. But I actually found myself looking forward to picking up this book whenever I had time to read for yet another discussion of balance sheets, profitability ratios, and yes, my personal favorite, EBITs.

Their explanations are clear, their ripped-from-the-headlines examples are relevant and compelling, and their writing style is lively. Their frequent playful and humorous asides help to humanize the material.

There are many helpful features in this book. One of my favorites is the embedded glossary - i.e., definitions that appear in a box on the page where the expressions are first used rather than at the end, requiring the reader to flip back and forth and risk losing their concentration. The toolbox at the end of each Part that gives the reader a hands-on opportunity to try out the concepts they have just learned is also helpful.

In addition, I appreciated their emphasis on finance as art not science, subject to assumptions, biases, even manipulation and fraud. I guess I knew that, but I didn't realize just how subjective it can be. And their discussion of the difference between cash and profit and the relationship between the two was especially lucid, lifting the fog that usually accompanies my attempts to understand, and most important, apply this concept.

This book is a must read for any manager. Armed with this book, they can make better financial decisions and more effectively manage their people, technology and resources. Perhaps most important, they might even stay awake during those interminably boring budget meetings and possibly even influence the discussions and outcomes.

About the Author
Herbert Waldmann obtained his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Mainz, Germany, in 1985 working with Professor H. Kunz, after which he completed a postdoctoral appointment with Professor G. Whitesides at Harvard University (USA). He was appointed as Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Bonn (1991), full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe (1993), and Director at the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Physiology Dortmund and Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Dortmund, Germany, in 1999. He has received numerous awards, e.g. the Otto-Bayer-Award (2001), the Max Bergmann Medal (2003), and recently the Emil-Fischer-Prize (2012). His research interests lie in bioactive compound development, target identification, and the chemical biology of Ras proteins.

Petra Janning studied chemistry at the University of M?nster, Germany, and did her PhD thesis at the Institute for Analytical Sciences in Dortmund, Germany in 1995. After different positions where she worked in the area of analytical chemistry and on the borderline between chemistry and biology she joined the Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Physiology, Dortmund, in the department of Professor H. Waldmann, where she is currently working. She is responsible for the Bioorganic Practical Course and the analytics in the department. She focused her work on mass spectrometry based methods in proteome research in particular in target protein identification of small molecules.

I have learned a lot from tis book too

This is a witty, comprehensive, and carefully researched book. The author's experience with different cultures and her deep understanding of her own culture makes for fascinating reading for both international people and Americans.

I consider it a long overdue exposé of American behavior because Asitimbay is fearless in the issues she covers--they are the very same topics we are afraid to discuss in public. For example, the author explores how we self-identify ourselves in the U.S., both racially and ethnically, versus how our government categorizes us. When Asitimbay reveals the various ways we practice our patriotism and religion in the U.S., she clearly breaks new ground as a cultural commentator.

In addition to being an important book from a sociological standpoint, What's Up America? is also a beautifully written one. It will appeal to readers of many backgrounds because it is so easy to read.

An extremely useful guide for foreign travelers or exchange students visiting America

A Foreigner's Guide to Understanding Americans is an extremely useful guide for foreign travelers or exchange students visiting America, as well as American hosts who may not be aware of the unconscious, ingrained aspects of their culture that their foreign guest will have to adapt to. What's Up America? succinctly summarizes in plain terms the broad history, unwritten social mores, and generally accepted rules of conduct in American society, in particular emphasizing both the difference between American society as it really is versus how it is portrayed in TV and movies, and particular American language idioms that may be confusing to a non-native English speaker. Chapters cover dating, religion, eating habits, economic and business customs, and much more. Though especially intended for foreign travelers, What's Up America? is fascinating reading for Americans as well, since it gives a no-nonsense, plain-terms summary of America's modern culture, revealing subconsciously internalized forces that drive us in spite of ourselves.

Entertaining and Illuminating - for visitors and citizens!

This breezy book skips, digs, and zooms across the United States' cultural landscape. The author, an ESL college instructor, entertains readers with unconventional insights based on census figures, national surveys, and personal experiences. Sometimes provocative, often witty, and always direct, the book deserves a wide readership among visiting students, recent immigrants, and American citizens. Of course, being a college instructor, I try to resist the considerable appeal of the broad generalizations, but these snapshots of "typical Americana" illuminate the nation's many eccentric traditions, habits, and lifestyles with humor and style. Easier to read than David Brooks or Bill Bryerson, this accessible book fills a niche between popular culture and the academic world. Call this sociology light with a comic twist. I strongly recommend this clever book of accessible, enjoyable cultural criticism. Perfect for a beach day - or gift to a friend traveling to the United States for the first time.

Excellent for Beginners

Kodansha's Furigana dictionary is simply one of the best JapaneseEnglish dictionaries I have seen on the market, especially for students of Japanese. The English-Japanese volume of this wonderful dictionary is simply indispensable to beginners of the language once they have mastered the two kana scripts, viz, hiragana and katakana, as would be expected of any serious student, since the dictionary does not contain any Romanised entries.
One great feature about this dictionary particularly valuable to beginners who may not know many kanji is that all the kanjis, be they in the entries or the examples, have small kanas printed over them indicating their pronunciation, i.e., furigana. The definitions themselves are up-to-date, clear, being written for English speakers, and most entries contain illustrative example sentences indicating of usage.
The English-Japanese section lists some 14,000 entries of commonly used English words. This section is rather limited in scope, for the native English speaker is likely to find that the word he wishes to translate into Japanese is not listed, and an alternative need be found.

If kanji exists for that entry, then it immediately follows the headword, after which comes the definition. Synonyms are also indicated in the entries, and ample example sentences are given. Three appendices are included, listing verb conjugations, numerical counters and place names.
The book itself is physically well produced, with a hardcover. The paper is of good quality, and the print is clear although none too large. Moreover, the size of the book is neither so large nor so heavy as to become cumbersome or inconvenient to use. Many of the typographical errors in the previous separate editions have been corrected in this combined edition.
In summary, then, the Kodansha's Furigana English & Japanese dictionary is a great boon to any serious beginning or intermediate student of Japanese. For the advance learner, however, its limited scope of some sixteen thousand words makes it perhaps not quite as useful. Two of its features, i.e., doing away with romaji (Romanised script), which is very irritating to users familiar with kana, by using kana instead (as the Japanese would, in any case), and indicating the reading of all kanjis with furigana, sets this dictionary apart from others in the market, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to any serious student embarking on a study of the Japanese language.

Worth every nickel

Let me start this review by saying that i'm a begginer in the studies of the japanese language. With that in mind i have to say that this dictionary it's just perferct for me.

Pros:
- The materials used to make this are top quality: the paper, the cover ... well, everything.
- It's very organized and the instructions in the beggining are very informative.
- Every word has at least one sentence. I can't emphasize this enough, especially when translating from english to japanese. It's really crucial to place the word in a context so there are no confusions.
- All kanjis come with furigana, this is just great to begginers that are also trying to learn kanji.
- It is a very complete dictionary FOR IT'S SIZE

Cons:
- Well ... i must say that i have only one con to this book. Due to it's size it may not be sufficient to more advanced students. As i said i'm a begginer so it's just perfect to me. Even if you are an advanced student you may want to buy this one just for it's size.

I would recommend this book to everyone, even if you are an advanced student. This dictionary is way more pratical than some HUGE BOOK. You may want to carry this arround and look for your bigger one only when this one fails to help you.

EDIT:
Just read a review saying that writing sentences is a waste of space. It's far from that. When you are translating a text from japanese to english you already have a context so a sentece in this case is less important. When you don't know how to spell/say a word in japanese you NEED a context. The same word in english can have SEVERAL distincs meanings in japanese. If the book don't lay a context to you it may lead you to erros.

Ichiban ii jishyo des! (The best dictionary!)

This dictionary is truly a gift from the gods of dictionaries. The furigana (little hiragana above the kanji) are a godsend, given that I don't know many kanji or all their pronunciations. The example sentances that follow most words are also incalcuably helpful in demonstrating how words are actually used in context. Some very useful phrases find their way into these example sentances, so this dictionary actually doubles as something of a strangely-arranged phrasebook.

The only whisper of a complaint that I have about this dictionary is twofold: the book is a bit heavy to tote around everywhere. Also, the furigana really are quite small. Readable, but small. If your eyesight is less than perfect, you're going to have to all but bury your nose in the book to read the furigana if you don't invest in a magnifying glass of some kind.

Other than that, I love the thing and will take it to Japan with me when I study-abroad there.

About the Author
Janny de Moor is a freelance culinary writer and photographer working from 't Harde, in the Netherlands, who has written over 20 cookery books. In 2004 she won the prestigious Wina Born Award for the best culinary publication in the Netherlands. Suzanne Vandyck was born in Belgium and later moved to California, where she established Worldchefs International LLC (www.worldchefs.net). Suzanne published an international recipe book on clay cooking, Cooking for Healthy Living with Vita Clay, and has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Culinary Instructor Recognition in 2006 for ACE (Cupertino Adult and Community Education), Sunnyvale, California.

Tasty recipes for food that's sort-of not-quite familiar

I came across this cookbook while I was looking for something else on the shelves of my nearby public library. I'm familiar with most European cuisines, as I'm sure you are, but if someone offered me ten bucks for every traditional Dutch or Belgian dish, I couldn't afford the bus fare home. Hmm, mussels and frites? Beer? Chocolate? Endive? I've had a few excellent Belgian restaurant meals, though, and flipping through the cookbook in the library made me say Yum a few times. This came home with me -- and I am happy it did. Now it's in my Amazon shopping cart.

Because I'm not the only one who's ignorant of Dutch and Belgian history, its eating habits, or the evolution of its cooking (remember Dutch West Indies from school? Where do you think all those spices ended up?) I appreciated the very-readable history and overview with which the book begins.

Most of the cookbook, of course, is given over to the 150 recipes, accompanied by lots of photos. Not just the finished dish; in most cases there are also "how to make this" pictures; the book promises 750 photos, and none of them are gratuitous. If you treated this as just an "Oooh pretty" food porn book, you'd be very satisfied.

But there's no reason to stop with the pictures because the recipes are very appealing. The cookbook is organized in a familiar way: soups; appetizers; snacks and street food; fish and shellfish; poultry and game; meat; salads and side dishes; desserts and drinks; baking and breads. I'm tempted to say that it's "like" northern French or German cooking, though of course it's its own cuisine... Still, I see plenty of similarities with German food (which I love), such as the use of mustard and asparagus, and with country French food. In other words, while there are plenty of regional specialties here, you'll find most of the ingredients familiar -- and, for the most part, find-able in your local well-stocked grocery store. (Getting rabbit, pheasant, and venison is always ridiculously expensive here in the U.S. though. I'm likely to substitute chicken whenever I get around to making the "rabbit in cherry beer" recipe that's been calling to me.)

So far, I made the Flemish-style Beef Stew with Beer, which is a lot like other beef stews -- onion, beef, garlic -- but with Chimay beer (how could THAT be bad?) and, uniquely, finished off with two slices of rustic bread spread with a few tablespoons of mustard. It was a hit. I keep getting geared up to make one of the three mussel dishes listed, as soon as I can find a reliable purveyor of mussels. Let's see, shall it be the mussel soup, or steamed mussels with celery, or "mussel meal" with fennel, celery, onion, Pernod, and chervil? I also have my eye on a veal-and-prune stew with lemon; trout with almonds (which looks a lot like French recipes for the same thing); and endive, ham and cheese gratin (Hmm, I wonder what Belgian endive tastes like *cooked*?)

Without doubt, there's plenty to keep me occupied and well fed. I think you'll like this cookbook, too.

This stunningly beautiful cookbook was previously published as two separate titles: DUTCH COOKING and THE FOOD AND COOKING OF BELGIUM.
The first 45 pages contain chapters on the culinary history and culture of both regions, followed by an introduction to typical foods and beverages. Next are 200 pages of lavishly illustrated recipes (3-7 full-color photographs per recipe), a list of suppliers, and a recipe index.
The recipes are grouped as follows:

Soups (22 pages)
Appetizers (16 pages)
Snacks and Street Food (22 pages)
Fish and Shellfish Dishes (16 pages)
Poultry and Game Dishes (24 pages)
Meat Dishes (28 pages)
Salads and Side Dishes (18 pages)
Desserts and Drinks (28 pages)
Baking and Breads (30 pages)

Each recipe starts with a short paragraph placing it into its cultural context, followed by a list of ingredients. Measurements are given three different ways: metric, US standard, and volume (cups, tsp. etc), and substitutions are suggested where appropriate. Instructions are clear, and broken down into numbered steps. Each recipe fills exactly one page, thus eliminating the need to turn the page while cooking.
Having grown up in Belgium, I was thrilled to find all my favorite recipes here, such as Watercress Soup; Liège Waffles; Ghent-Style Chicken Stew (Waterzooi); Endive, Ham and Cheese Gratin; Flemish-Style Beef Stew with Beer; Chocolate Mousse; Dame Blanche; Tarte au Maton or Mattentaart.

This book answers the growing American interst in Belgian and Dutch cuisine. Both countries' traditions get a fair share of attention, and the recipes are do-able. This is always a problem when some ingredients may be difficult to obtain.
