This should be interesting

At first, when I saw the title, I thought to myself...."This should be interesting!" Outside of fiction I have done very little work reviewing non-fiction novels. Once I opened the book and I realized that it actually was a list of questions, I knew I had to take a more practical approach to reviewing it.

I decided to use this book along with my boyfriend as a way of evaluating or re-evaluating our personality traits and our relationship. Some of the sections that we both enjoyed taking were the favourites, love, hobbies and friends. We turned one section in particular, favourites, into a game show. Guess who got all of the answers correct?

I thought that Vikram channels the skill of a couples therapist with the type of questions that he posses and it's hard to believe that these questions were developed from his personal experience. It kind of makes you wonder what type of experiences he had in the first place. On the one hand, I think that the book is geared towards people who are just starting out in their relationships. Some of the questions that were present were some that you should really ask the man/woman you are dating. Like for example, which television series do you love watching - even reruns of? On the other hand, it would seem weird to ask the person that you're just starting a relationship with how frequently they checked their bank account or whether they are good at managing money. So I also believe that those types of questions, which were prominent in the book, are best answered by couples who have been in a relationship for more than a year. More importantly, anyone who's in a relationship should read this book and ask their significant others these questions. You may just be surprised by the answers that you get.

Standard questions you should already have the answer to!

If you don't have most of these answers already, you relationship might be in trouble. These are just basic questions like: Are you addicted to alcohol? Did you ever want to write a book? Are you addicted to anything?

These are basic questions that any relationship with good communication would already have the answer to. I suggest reading the sample before buying, so you see if you are just wasting your money or not.

This book repeats questions. The cover doesn't make any sense. It doesn't seem to have been edited very well. The good thing is the questions are grouped according to topics. Some topics lack depth, where as other questions are so thorough it is exhausting to read, let alone talk about.

I'm working on a text book teaching Jewish culture, heritage, and religion, as it has been depicted through graphic literature throughout the years. Simcha Weinstein's wonderful book has been a gift to me, during my research. As a fellow Jew and comic book fan, I had always been proud of the many contributions my fellow Jews made to the creation of so many classic comic book characters and that the foundation of the Golden and Silver Age of comics could be primarily attributed to Jewish writers and artists, but Weinstein's book demonstrates not just what I previously stated but how many aspects of Jewish culture and lore have found their way into the continuity of classic characters and stories. If you're like me and love learning more about the roles that Jews have played in the creation of your favorite medium, or if you're a true fan of comics and want to learn more about their secret Jewish past, Up, Up, And Oy Vey is the book for you!

as stated before in regard to another book on the same subject, some of the material in this book was not new to me, since I've been reading many books lately on the history of comics, but this book has a lot in it that is new to me. I loved comix as a kid growing up. Now that I learn the story behind them, I have a a new appreciation of the subject

This was a very interesting introduction to the backstory and development of superheroes but I wish it was more in depth. There are several short essays with a lot of the same explanations of how Jewish mythos relates to central themes of comic books. Its a good, fast read but is still somehow lacking.

Dynamic optimization is the process of determining control and state histories for a dynamic system over a finite time period to minimize a performance index. There may be constraints on the final states of the system and on the 'in-flight' states and controls. An important special case is when the dynamic system is linear and the performance index is a quadratic functional of the states and controls. The main tools of dynamic optimization are the calculus of variations and dynamic programming. Dynamic optimization is used to determine efficient maneuvers of aircraft, spacecraft, and robots, and in the design of structures where the independent variable is distance along the structure instead of time.

Computational algorithms are developed for solving practical problems and many examples and problems are presented. The algorithms are coded in MATLAB which is a popular software package for engineers interested in dynamics and control. Solutions for the examples and the many problems are provided on a disc that goes with the book. The problems are difficult but doing them is the only way to really learn the subject.

The book starts with a review of parameter optimization (ordinary calculus) and then treats dynamic optimization (the calculus of variations), first with fixed final time and no constraints, then with terminal constraints, and then with terminal constraints and open final time. This is followed by chapters on linear-quadratic problems which are of practical interest in themselves but also develop the theory needed to consider the second variation and neighboring-optimal feedback control. Next is a chapter on dynamic programming, an interesting but not very practical method of nonlinear feedback control, and then a chapter on neighboring-optimal feedback control which is practical. The next to last chapter deals with inequality constraints, first for static systems (nonlinear programming) and then for dynamic systems using inverse dynamic optimization. The last chapter covers singular problems, i. e. problems where the second variation is identically zero for a finite time; these problems occur when the system equations are linear in one or more of the controls. There is an appendix giving a short history of dynamic optimization.

Chapter 5 describes dynamic optimization for linear systems with time-varying feedback gains. With fast computers having large memory storage, this is now an attractive alternative to constant-gain feedback control, since it cuts the time to reach a desired state almost in half. In Chapters 9 and 10 we describe an inverse dynamic optimization method due to Seywald (1994) that uses nonlinear programming software to solve dynamic optimization problems with inequality constraints or singular arcs.

Before the advent of the digital computer (about 1950) only rather simple dynamic optimization problems could be solved (in terms of tabulated functions). Now, with powerful digital computers, numerical solutions can be found for realistic problems. Some current aircraft contain flight management computers that find optimal flight paths in real time and send them to the autopilot for implementation. Digital control is now commonplace, where a digital computer is the logic element in a feedback control system involving sensors and actuators. Spaceflight would not have been possible without digital control. Microprocessors have made it possible to use digital control in cars, home appliances, robots, and even toys.

This book updates and extends the first half of Applied Optimal Control 1. An update and extension of the second half is under preparation with the tentative title "Optimal Control with Uncertainty"; it will deal with optimal linear feedback control in the presence of uncertain inputs and an uncertain dynamic model. In the intervening 29 years the development and spread of personal computers has made it possible to do more interesting problems while learning the subject. Hence this book contains more examples and problems than its predecessor.

The codes presented here were prepared for use on personal computers. Several aerospace companies have developed codes for very large problems which require supercomputers. For example Boeing (Ref. HP) has developed OTIS (Optimal Trajectories by Implicit Simulation) and Lockheed-Martin (Ref. BCS) has developed POST (Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories) which use collocation techniques with NLP software. Collocation techniques are very effective but are not discussed in this text in an effort to limit the size of the book.

The discrete algorithms presented in Chapters 2 to 4 are largely there for pedagogical reasons since they are simpler and lead into the continuous algorithms. However they also lead into the discrete algorithms for the linear-quadratic problems of Chapters 5 and 6 which are used more than the continuous algorithms in current practice.

I should like to thank Carolyn Edwards for her patient work in putting the text on the computer. Using LATEX I made changes and additions on my personal computer. About the Author

Arthur E. Bryson is Pigott Professor of Engineering Emeritus at Stanford University, where he served on the faculty from 1968 to 1994. He has also taught at Harvard and MIT and worked as a research engineer and consultant at Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon. Professor Bryson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. His awards include the IEEE Control Systems Award, the ASME Oldenberger Award, and the AACC Bellman Award. He is an Honorary Fellow of AIAA and an Honorary Member of IEEE. He is the author of 100 papers and three books.

The Way We Were

It is extremely hard to judge this book solely on it's own merits because the shadow of the film, staring Robert Redford and Barbra Streissand, looms so large. What I can say is that readers expecting to find the story depicted in the film will not be disappointed. This is one instance where the filmmakers were very true to the novel, in many cases lifting dialogue verbatim from the book. Having said this, I am afraid most will find that the screenwriters didn't leave much. The book is serviceable and we do learn a bit more about Katie and Hubble and the times in which they lived but what becomes apparent is how much dimension and color the movie actually adds to the story. Granted, Laurents is drawing from his own life and writing about his friends and their experiences but somehow their stories work better when we can see them. Redford and Streissand, as well as the rest of the talented cast, imbue the characters with a depth and implied history that isn't as apparent on the page and the movie story, frankly, feels tighter and more focused. As if the author made one final edit. If the reader is simply interested in seeing how the story depicted in the film developed, the book is interesting but compared to the film itself, there is no contest. The best way to experience Arthur Laurents' story is to watch the film by the same name.

An interesting book

for the reader because of what it's about: (1) A woman who loves a man & changes herself because of her love for him, only to find that he can't change despite his love for her; (2) set in Hollywood before & after HUAC & the blacklists. It's interesting for a writer or scholar, too, because it shows how a master playwright & screenwriter adapts to the novel. But Laurents DOESN'T adapt to the form, and I think I know why. He depends on others (actors, directors) to make his plays & screenplays engaging & entertaining; but in a novel, he has to do these himself. He hints that he can't when he mentions rewrites of his chief character's second novel, and the defects he finds in it are those of the book he's writing! Also, Laurents's customary method for constructing plot--mixing & matching from a menu--works well for plays & movies where the writer is the maker of plots, but not in the novel, where manners are more important than actions & motives are more important than manners. Laurents writes a novel like a screenplay, episode by episode, a technique that works for F. Scott Fitzgerald & Terry Southern, because they confine themselves to the superficial & don't seek to explain manners or motives. Laurents tries to explain, and the result is clinical. What we have here is Scott & Zelda transported to the Forties through Sixties, with Laurents fleshing out characters with people he has known or heard about. The result is interesting, not engaging. Still, a good read on a summer's day, if you can get Barbra Streisand out of your ear.

Queen B* Book 3

I was disappointed with the book. It wasn't as fun as the other 2 books. Drew was barely in the book. When he was, it seemed like an afterthought. His injury was written semi-well. His doubt as to why Lexie was with him after his injury rang true. He sulked entirely too long in my opinion.

Lexie was hard to take at some points in this book. She is not sweet. Her doubts about herself rang true. It's why I like her, along with the frizzy hair. I have curly hair too. She is self-absorbed throughout most of this book especially about Morgan. Richard didn't talk to Morgan until late in the book. Lexie should have. She worried about their friendship but didn't act.

Richard's story seemed non-personal. Bullying is a real world crime, but it did not feel authentic to the story. His dating life was more a concern than dealing with the vandalism and hate he was experiencing. I liked the debate club story, but it took too much away from Drew and Lexie's story.

Morgan's story WAS an afterthought completely. No talk of counseling or anything else after her rape, it was simply a plot point to get Morgan and Lexie back together as friends.

Lexie and Taylor's mom finding out she was pregnant was an odd choice also. What point did it serve?

I absolutely get life is about hardships. What I loved about the first two books was the fact it was interspersed with moments of joy, doubt, insecurity, laughter, snark and warmth. I felt no warmth in this book. What a shame.

Queen B* Alexis takes on having a boyfriend and other challenges!

I'm a huge fan of this series. I love Alexis and her "I will not put up with this" attitude. She's a crusader for the truth and under dogs, and such a strong female character. I've loved being in her head and I loved being with her as she tackled her attraction to Brett and other problems at school and home.

I really feel like this installment in the series showed Alexis's emotional growth as she handled things going on in her life and those around her. She was tested on all fronts, at school, at home, when it came to her rules about being with Brett, and with her friends. It wasn't really that she was being active, but rather reacting to the situations around her. I was not happy about a number of things. The one that plagued me the most was the situation with Morgan and Alexis. As Alexis's best friend, I found it highly irregular she would attack and treat Alexis the way she did. She quite easily took the word of someone she didn't know that well and didn't stop to think about how ridiculous the accusations leveled at Alexis were.

I did like seeing how things changed with Brett. Granted Alexis's romantic boundaries were pushed, not the physical ones, just the ones with actually having a boyfriend and everything that comes along with it. I didn't like how Alexis was still hung up on not letting people know she and Brett were a couple. I liked how we got another closer look at Brett and his family. I love his sisters and the way he is with them. I felt like the dynamic between Brett and his father was better visible in this book. I also felt like the dynamic between Brett and Alexis changed in this book too. Previously it felt like Brett was trying to support Alexis and show her she didn't have to be so hard all the time. In this book it really felt like Alexis was being a great girlfriend and supportive to Brett, kind of bolstering him up.

I will admit to being surprised about what was happening at home with Alexis's sister and mother. Those were some very interesting developments. I loved seeing how Alexis was able to help one of her best friends combat hate. It's a sensitive topic and can be so damaging to teenage minds and I loved the way it was handled. I can say that I really enjoyed reading this installment of The Queen B* series. I do hope there are more books to come because I feel like there's a lot more poised to happen before Alexis and Brett can relax and have an happy ever after. We still don't know what Summer is holding over Brett's head that causes him to drop everything and run to her when she asks him to. Crista McHugh has done a fabulous job at taking a story that could be really long if told at once and breaking it into smaller books. I love the issues she tackles and the way she does them. This series is fast becoming one of my favorite young adult series to read!

Queen Gets Her King

This YA series continues where The Queen B* Strikes Back ended. Alexis and Brett are officially (or unofficially) dating. She has all these rules to keep their reputations intact at school. No PDA, no hanging out at school, no attending homecoming together, etc. Although their relationship seems to be going great, little crises keep popping up with friends, parents and more. Will they be able to overcome these challenges or are they doomed from the start?

“‘Think about it,’ he murmured before brushing his lips against mine once more.

I answered with a sigh. As much as I wanted to make him happy, I knew better. He’d want to hang out with his friends, and I didn’t belong there, not after I’d called out so many of them on my blog. I’d even managed to get three of his friends suspended last week. Awkward silence would be the best outcome of the evening. The worst would be them dissing him for dating me. Hence, why I instituted the rules. They weren’t just to protect me. They were also to protect him.”

I enjoyed the third book in this YA series where Alexis and Brett try being in a relationship. Alexis has instituted all of these rules to keep their worlds from colliding but it becomes maddening when it almost seems like she’s pushing Brett away. The guy must have the patience of a saint. I do love that Alexis still champions for the underdogs and learns to compromise with Brett’s friends. This story has good lessons about being less judgmental and learning how to readjust your goals when life throws you a curve. I really think it’s a great story for teens.

If you enjoy this genre, I can definitely recommend this series for YA. It can be funny and quirky with a bit of angst thrown in. I’m sure there is more coming with this gang as they head toward graduation.
